SYRIAN CASSETTE ARCHIVES is a forthcoming multifaceted project that aims to archive, preserve and share the substantial collection of audio cassettes that archivist Mark Gergis acquired in Syria between 1997 and 2010. The collection currently contains over 400 audio cassette-tapes from what can be called Syria’s cassette-era. Collecting these audio-artifacts reflects decades of on-site research and personal connections with Syrian music shops, producers and musicians.
يعد أرشيف الشرائط السورية مشروعاً متعدد اﻷوجه يهدف إلى توثيق وحفظ ومشاركة مجموعة الموسيقى الكبيرة التي حصل عليها المؤرشف الصوتي اﻷمريكي العراقي مارك جرجس في سوريا بين عاميّ 1997 و2010. تشمل المجموعة حالياً أكثر من 400 شريط كاسيت مما يمكن تسميته عهد الكاسيت السوري. يعكس جمع هذه اﻵثار الصوتية عقوداً من البحث قام بها مارك جرجس على اﻷراضي السورية وصلاته الشخصية مع متاجر الموسيقى والمنتجين والموسيقيين.
The collection is broad in scope – a window into the Syrian listening landscape that spans decades. Contents include recordings of live wedding concerts, studio albums, soloists, classical, religious, patriotic and children’s music, among others – with a special focus on regional dabke and shaabi folk-pop music, popular in wedding culture, at parties and social gatherings.
Despite myriad sectarian and political divides resulting from the Syrian crisis, this music has remained a unifying bond for Syrians. The project endeavors to present evidence of an eclectic and diverse pre-war Syria, featuring a full breadth of music styles, including that of Syrian Arabs, Assyrians, Kurds, Armenians and Iraqis in Syria who fled US/UK-led sanctions and war through the 2000s.
Working closely with Syrian communities in multiple countries, the varied project outputs will be made accessible through several mediums, including an interactive online database, a podcast and radio series featuring the interviews and curated portions of the archives, and a multi-format music compilation album and public presentations.
Given the ongoing Syrian conflict, and the inherently ephemeral nature of these releases, many items in this collection would be difficult to find again. Many former creators and producers have fled the country, and others have experienced internal displacement.
These demographic shifts mean that long- standing music circuits and traditions have been disrupted. As a result, there is an urgency in mapping and preserving this facet of contemporary music heritage for Syrians and the wider world alike. The hope is that through its documentation, evidence of Syria’s diverse communities and their musical heritage can help reduce the cultural amnesia and loss that can arise from losing artistic histories.
Through its sounds and stories, the project hopes to help bridge the gap in continuity between the Syrian musical landscape at the turn of the century and what can currently be found digitally or on the internet. It aims to document sounds and memories of a pre-war musical history that should not be overlooked or forgotten.
المجموعة واسعة النطاق وتعد نافذة على مشهد الاستماع السوري الذي يمتد لعقود. وتشمل تسجيلات فولكلورية خام وحفلات موسيقية حية وتسجيلات لحفلات زفاف وألبومات استوديو وعزف منفرد وموسيقى عربية تقليدية ووطنية وشعبية وموسيقى للأطفال وغيرها، وتركز بشكل خاص على الموسيقى الشعبية والدبكة اﻹقليمية.
بقيت الموسيقى رابطة موحدة للسوريين على الرغم من الانقسامات الطائفية والسياسية الكثيرة الناتجة عن الحرب في سوريا. يسعى المشروع إلى تقديم دلائل على وجود سوريا متنوعة في فترة ما قبل الحرب، تضم محموعة واسعة من اﻷنماط الموسيقية، بما في ذلك الموسيقى الخاصة بالسوريين العرب واﻵشوريين واﻷكراد واﻷرمن والعراقيين الذين نزحوا إلى سوريا فراراً من الحرب والعقوبات الاتي قادتها الولايات المتحدة اﻷمريكية والمملكة المتحدة خلال أعوام العقد اﻷول من القرن الحادي والعشرين.
بفضل التعاون الوثيق مع المجتمعات السورية سيتم توفير مخرجات هذا المشروع المتنوعة للسوريين والجمهور اﻷوسع من خلال عدة وسائط، بما في ذلك قاعدة بيانات تفاعلية على شبكة اﻹنترنت وسلسلة تدوين صوتي ومسلسلات إذاعية على الراديو تتضمن مقابلات ومختارات من اﻷرشيف وكذلك إصداراً لمجموعة موسيقية وعروضاً تقديمية عامة.
بسبب الصراع السوري المستمر والطبيعة الزائلة لهذه اﻹصدارات سيكون من الصعب العثور على العديد من مقتنيات هذه المجموعة مرة أخرى، وقد فر العديد من المبدعين والمنتجين من البلد وشهد آخرون النزوح الداخلي.
هذه التغيرات السكانية تعني أن دوائر المعرفة الموسيقية والتقاليد الموسيقية القديمة قد تمزقت، وبالتالي هناك حاجة ملحة للتوثيق والحفاظ على هذا الجانب من التراث الموسيقي المعاصر للسوريين والعالم اﻷوسع على حد سواء. يأمل هذا المشروع أن من خلال توثيقاته يمكن إبراز دلائل على مجتمعات سوريا المتنوعة وتراثها الموسيقي، والحد من فقدان الذاكرة الثقافية الذي يمكنه الحدوث بسبب فقدان التواريخ الفنية.
يأمل المشروع أن يتمكن من سد الفجوة المستمرة بين المشهد الموسيقي السوري في مطلع القرن وما يتواجد حالياً بشكل رقمي أو عبر اﻹنترنت، وذلك من خلال العديد من اﻷصوات والقصص التي سيجمعها، حيث يهدف إلى توثيق أصوات وذكريات تاريخ موسيقيٍّ لفترة ما قبل الحرب والذي لا ينبغي إغفاله أو نسيانه.
